How To Live Well On The Eve Of The Deal

There is an extensive amount of content aimed at thriving within the real estate industry. A significant portion of it focuses on the external factors: buying, selling, finding the right agent, and the mortgage process.

But since we are entering the busiest time of the real estate market, let’s take a different approach: how can you best handle the significant amount of stress and pressure you are facing at this time of the year?

Almost half of the real estate deals that happen in any given year occur between May and August; there are hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake, and people’s futures and hopes are all tied into it.

Real estate brokers, attorneys, mortgage brokers, surveyors, and appraisers do this for a living. Buyers and sellers may do this sporadically—or maybe even once. Regardless of the frequency, everyone feels the burden of the stress that comes with these transactions.

Here are ways to navigate some of the emotional challenges that come with real estate:

Get To Bed

People are busy. There are not enough hours in the day. One of the first things people do to create more time to work is to cut out sleep. Eliminating sleep is a short-term fix that can create long-lasting problems. Here are some benefits of sleep:

  • Increased concentration
  • Higher productivity
  • More cognition

In addition to losing all these benefits, you know what it feels like the following day in the afternoon!  You turn to an increased amount of caffeine, calorically dense foods, and you put yourself more in the hole.

Your work suffers, you stay up later, and the cycle deteriorates further.

Food Is A Fuel

Researchers have put forward arguments suggesting that foods with a high glycemic index (e.g., refined, processed carbohydrates), increase your risk of depression and exhaustion.

Like in the section above, your stress levels and lack of time due to work and other commitments, might drive you to choose convenient foods rather than healthy ones.

Choose foods that will fuel you and even improve your memory. This includes:

  • Fish because they have omega-3 fatty acids (good fat)
  • Fruit for the polyphenols
  • Vegetables for flavonoids

“You” Above Real Estate

People tend to put themselves last. They choose to be selfless. Although this comes from a good place, you must take care of yourself. You will be putting yourself in the best position to take care of your family. You will be the best version of yourself at work and home.

When you come home for the day, don’t be so drained that you can’t be a full-time husband, wife, or parent.  True, money gets lost but you can always work to get it back. Don’t lose track of the things in your life that can be lost that you can’t get back…like that ballgame, recital or date night with your spouse.
